CHASE
is an alliance of groups dedicated to protecting the health of their
communities and safeguarding the Cork Harbour environment for future
generations. Our overall aims are to:
- Prevent toxic waste incinerator in Cork Harbour
- Promote awareness of alternative solutions
- Increase national/local opposition to incineration
- Actively promote non-burn solutions.
CHASE was formed in October 2001. We are represented
at a local level by groups in Carrigaline, Cobh, Cork, Crosshaven,
Douglas, Kinsale, Midleton, Monkstown/Passage/Glenbrook, Ringaskiddy
and Youghal.
These groups are your voice in the campaign for
a safe environment, and most urgently, for preventing construction
of a hazardous waste incinerator at Ringaskiddy.
Our current campaign
Currently, our main campaign relates to the proposed construction
by Indaver of a Hazardous Waste Incinerator at Ringaskiddy on Cork
Harbour. Our concerns about the development include:
- International guidelines (World Health Organisation)
indicate that the site in Ringaskiddy is unsuitable.
- Health studies suggest that the dioxin, heavy
metals, and particulate matter emitted from incinerators are harmful
to our health.
- International and national waste management
policies envisage incineration as a last resort, to be used only
when all other options have been exhausted.
Despite these facts, An Bord Pleanala granted
permission for the development, against the detailed advice of their
own Senior Planning Inspector, and despite the objections of over
23,000 people and the refusal of planning permission by Cork County
Council.
Our message is simple. An incinerator in Cork
Harbour is:
Unnecessary
|
There are
safer, better ways of dealing with our waste. |
Unsafe |
It poses a risk to public
safety; and pollution from the process can cause birth and heart
defects, learning difficulties in children, cancers and respiratory
problems. |
Unacceptable |
23,000 people said NO
to planning permission; Cork County Council REFUSED planning permission;
One of Ireland's senior planners gave 14 solid planning reasons
why it should NOT BE BUILT. |
CHASE has campaigned vigorously against
the proposed incinerator: raising awareness, lobbying our elected
representatives, and making detailed, reasoned objections to the planning
authority and Oral Hearing. All our work is funded by voluntary donations
and fundraising activities.
