Irish Examiner - 27/01/05 I WISH to tell Irish people who are worried about waste incineration that I have the misfortune to live next to one of France’s many incineration units. I reside only a few hundred yards from a gigantic chimney that constantly emits foul odours day and night, with unclear explanations as to the health consequences. We are told that it is correctly regulated, but I find that hard to believe as the smell is often unbearable. When you are forced to close your windows and shutters and burn fragrant candles, there is a problem. We need an urgent national recycling programme at all levels. Otherwise we risk burning away our future. Cormac Fiddes |
