Indaver picked windy location for test data

INDAVER Ireland may indeed have conducted an assessment of the impact of emissions from its proposed incinerator, as pointed out by Jackie Keaney (Irish Examiner letters, August 27). Unfortunately, the emission modelling input data on which this "extensive" assessment is based on meteorological conditions recorded at Cork airport some 12km from the proposed incinerator site, 104m higher and one of the windiest locations in the south Cork city area.

However, the inaccuracies arising therefrom may well be offset by the installation of what is apparently unique emissions control technology at the proposed Ringaskiddy facility.

While the rest of us mere mortals all endure breakdown of even the most robust computers, cars and washing machines, Indaver's omission to assess the impact of failure of its emissions control equipment on Cork Harbour suggests that such breakdown could never occur. What a pity that Indaver did not have this extraordinary technological development installed at its hazardous waste incinerator in Antwerp, recently closed for breach of dioxin emission levels.
