Letter to Evening Echo - 06-05-09

I read the article in today's issue and felt compelled to write. The article gave the impression that there were supporters of the Indaver application when in fact there is not even one single submission either from any public representative, company or individual in support. It is clear from the huge number of submissions that the entire community is opposed to mass incineration in the harbour.

The case for incineration put forward by Indaver has been defeated at comprehensive and transparent debates at TCD, UCC and at the last ABP oral hearing. The Inspector, having listened to all the evidence, strongly recommended a refusal but his well-considered opinion was briskly overturned by the board.

I understand the necessity for balanced journalism and obtaining views from both sides. However, with the greatest respect to your excellent paper, may I say that I believe that it is flawed journalism to seek and publish the opinion of Indaver, the vested interest, as to whether they think we should buy incineration. They cannot be objective, speak for no one but themselves and are expert salesmen.

It is an immense burden on us all to finance yet another oral hearing on this issue.

This is truly a crisis moment for Cork. This is about the right of our communities to democracy, justice and a safe environment and I appeal to your newspaper to give close attention to the important issues that come to light at this hearing, especially those relating to the threat to public health that this application undoubtedly poses, especially, as Dr. Elizabeth Cullen pointed out
at the hearing today, to our children.
